Volunteer Land Stewards- Fight the Phrag. Work Day

Spring 2017: Land Management Volunteer Opportunities

Every year, rare takes on new ecological restoration initiatives in order to enhance and rehabilitate the unique native habitats of this urban land trust. Together with volunteer and community support, the rare Charitable Research Reserve is happy to provide meaningful opportunities for environmental education and stewardship through volunteer restoration activities. Below is a brief description of an opportunity made possible by the funding and support of the Biodiversity Education and Awareness Network (BEAN).

May 27th, 2017     9:30 AM -1:30 PM

Meeting Spot:

ECO Centre (768 Blair Road, Cambridge)

Project Details:

Are you interested in learning more about biodiversity, invasive species and how you can make a difference? If so, this is the event for you! In honour of the International Day for Biodiversity and with financial support from the Biodiversity Education and Awareness Network (BEAN), rare is hosting a workshop on the identification and removal of Common Reed (Phragmites australis). The day will start with an introduction to rare and a discussion on invasive species, how they are affecting biodiversity and why it is so important to manage them. We will then conduct a biodiversity activity at the work site to demonstrate these effects before getting to work actually removing Common Reed from around a recently restored cold water creek. Besides improving biodiversity at the creek, we will also be experimenting with three different non-chemical removal methods to determine the most effective strategy for fighting Common Reed. Participants will leave with a better understanding of invasive species and biodiversity as well as the skills to tackle your own invasive species either at home or elsewhere in your community!
