Butterfly Monitoring Assistant

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in local wildlife, enjoy nature, and are interested in contributing to essential conservation efforts at the rare Charitable Research Reserve.

Tasks:

  • Accompany Ecological Monitoring Assistant on weekly walk of butterfly monitoring transects
  • Record all observations on data sheets
  • Assist with photography and identification of unknown butterflies
  • Take weather measurements (temperature and wind speed)

We are seeking volunteers who are able to commit to one day of the week (monitoring usually occurs from Monday to Thursday, with the occasional Friday being required), returning on a weekly basis.  Butterfly monitoring is weather dependent, meaning some flexibility will be required, but will always occur between 10am and 4pm.  A typical day will take between 2 and 4 hours to complete, usually starting at 10am.  Preference will be given to volunteers who can commit to at least 4 weeks of volunteering.

Required Qualifications:

  • Physically fit and comfortable walking over rough terrain (often off-trail)
  • Keen observation skills
  • Neat handwriting and well developed organizational skills
  • Some previous butterfly identification skills helpful, but not required

Training Provided:

Orientation session with Ecological Monitoring Assistant involving the basics of butterfly monitoring protocol and an introduction to butterfly identification.
