Vegetation Sampling Protocol Volunteer

Tasks:

  • Assist the Terrestrial Monitoring Intern with field work following the vegetation sampling protocol
  • Measure DBH (diameter at breast height)
  • Identify plants and estimate percent covers within a plot (sampling in dry sugar maple/deciduous forests and diverse mineral/organic swamps)

We are asking volunteers to commit a minimum of 4 hours at a time. Ideally volunteers can commit on a weekly basis until the end of August.

Required Qualifications:

  • Previous plant ID skills are helpful, but not required. An interest in learning plant ID is important
  • Attention to detail and the ability to differentiate between different plants
  • Comfortable working outdoors and being off trail for 4+ hours

Training Provided:

Training will be ongoing and provided in the field. Training will include the VSP protocol and plant identification.

  • Learning a vegetation sampling protocol that is used throughout Ontario
  • Gaining confidence in the identification of southern Ontario vascular flora
  • Gaining practical field experience
