Phragmites Management

Description:

Friday, September 8, 2017
9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Meet at Lamb's Inn (1679 Blair Road, Cambridge)

Every year, rare takes on new ecological restoration initiatives in order to enhance and rehabilitate the unique native habitats of this urban land trust. Together with volunteer and community support, the rare Charitable Research Reserve is happy to provide meaningful opportunities for environmental education and stewardship through volunteer restoration activities. Join us and help conserve biodiversity in various locations on the property by removing Common Reed (Phragmites australis) stands which are outcompeting native plants and spreading at a rapid rate.

Identification of invasive species training will be provided on site as well as instruction on proper removal techniques. This is a great opportunity for those looking to gain in field experience with ecological restoration and become more familiar with the flora of southern Ontario.

Recommended Clothing:

  • Sturdy, closed-toed shoes and rubber boots or hip waders in case the stand is in water (some waders will be provided)
  • Layers of clothing that can get dirty
  • Long-sleeved shirt and long pants
  • A hat

Remember to Bring:

  • A refillable water bottle
  • Snacks and/or a packed lunch
  • Work gloves if you have them
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Rain coat (if rain is in the forecast)

We Will Bring:

  • Extra work gloves
  • Equipment
  • First Aid
  • Hip Waders

Washrooms:

Since we will be working in remote area(s) of the property, we do not have access to washroom facilities. Toilet paper and hand sanitizer will be made available in case nature calls!
