Local Award Winning Scientist, Author, and key Advisor to rare, Doug Larson, launches latest book the Storyteller Guitar at rare

For Immediate Release

Cambridge/North Dumfries, ON (June 29, 2011): Doug Larson, award-winning scientist, lecturer, instrument maker, musician and author, launches his latest book, the Storyteller Guitar, continuing a journey to tell local stories, shared by an international community, including details of some of the rare Charitable Research Reserve’s own history.

Doug and rare, invite the public to attend the rare hosted launch on Wednesday, July 6th, 2011 at the charity’s head office in the old Nicholson’s Tavern building in Blair. The historical building is a fitting place as the guitar creator brings to life a fascinating story of how a guitar was built using 3,562 separate pieces from all over the planet, including one piece from right here on the protected reserve in the heart of Waterloo Region, owned by environmental charity. From the extinct tree that became the body of this great musical instrument, to the ancient fossil used in the first fret, this incredibly unique guitar has transformed into a narrator of many stories.

“It appears to be a book about a guitar, but just as the cover of the book suggests, in the background are stories about a vast array of artistic, scientific, and historical artifacts that comprise the body of the instrument,” says Larson. “The stories in the book involve 2.5 billion years of earth history, materials from 6 continents, successes and failures of 35 businesses, and the lives of 68 people. In a way, the book is the autobiography of the instrument itself.”

Though donations to help support rare are certainly encouraged and welcome (receipts are available), this event is free to the public and takes place at rare’s head office, Lamb’s Inn, also known as the former Nicholson’s Tavern, located at 1679 Blair Road in Cambridge from 7 PM to9 PM. Books will be signed and available for purchase on site. In addition to writing his latest masterpiece, Dr. Larson sits on rare’s Environmental Advisory and Research Advisory Committees. He is a committed supporter of rare and encourages others to join him and to learn more. For more information on the Storyteller Guitar, visit www.storytellerguitar.com.

About rare
Founded in 2001, the rare Charitable Research Reserve exists to preserve, intact in perpetuity, a 900+ acre land reserve along the Grand and Speed Rivers. It is not only a beautiful landscape rich with natural and cultural heritage in one of the fastest growing areas of the country, but includes trees more than 240 years old and a host of diverse habitats and ecosystems, even landscapes indicative of pre-settlement times in southern Ontario. These habitats are home to a myriad of species, some of which are species at risk regionally, provincially, nationally and globally.

Our goal is to preserve the land for future generations by focusing on research, education, conservation, and ecological restoration. Learn more about rare online at www.raresites.org.
