Bluebird Box Monitoring Volunteer

We are looking for volunteers who enjoy nature and contributing to the bigger picture of essential conservation efforts.

Tasks:

  • Cleaning out bluebird boxes to prepare the boxes for a new season of bluebird and tree swallow nesting
  • Identifying nests and eggs by species
  • Aging bluebird nestlings
  • Completing and submitting monitoring forms
  • Reporting and repairing of small damage(s) to the boxes if possible (e.g. loose screws, holes in box, tightening/replacing wire that attaches boxes to the T-bar posts)

Firm weekly commitment for 16 weeks (mid-April to mid-August), plus 1-2 days in early spring or late winter.

Skills Needed:

  • Physically fit to cover uneven terrain in field locations
  • Previous experience aging bluebirds is ideal, but not necessary. We welcome experienced and amateur bird enthusiasts.
  • Training is more intensive for this position and we can only accept people that are able to commit to the 16 week term.

Training:

Orientation session, as well as initial session detailing status and location of bluebird boxes on rare property and bluebird nesting biology. Some opportunities to shadow experienced monitors, depending on previous experience.
