NestWatch Monitor (Barn Swallows)

We are currently accepting applications for the volunteer role of NestWatch Monitor (Barn Swallows). If you’re interested in gaining experience in research and making a positive difference, then we’re looking for you!


  • Conduct mirror checks on Barn Swallow nesting structure weekly.
  • Complete and submit monitoring forms.
  • Interacting with public trail users.

Firm weekly commitment from mid-May to end of July.

Skills Needed:

  • Previous experience identifying swallows and conducting nest checks preferred, but not necessary. We welcome experienced and amateur bird enthusiasts.
  • Physically fit to walk routes or trail of various length.
  • Training is more intensive for this position and we can only accept people that are able to commit to monitoring for the full season.


Orientation session, as well as initial training session detailing barn swallows nesting biology. Some opportunities to shadow experienced monitoring, depending on experience.


  • Developing your bird species identification skills.
  • Spending time outdoors hiking in a variety of habitats at rare.
  • Helping provide data on a declining bird species.
  • Networking opportunities within the environmental sector, and an ability to develop your job experience and references.
