ECO Camps

Summer campers are taught how to handle butterfly nets before heading out to explore.

Dear Campers, Parents and Guardians,

We regrettably inform you that the rare Charitable Research Reserve is cancelling our 2020 Summer Every Child Outdoors (ECO) Camp. The decision to not run camp this year was not easy, as we wanted to support families during this difficult time. However, given the COVID-19 pandemic and considerations around health and safety, we feel that with the resources available to us, it is not possible for us to run camp in a fun, safe way for our campers this year.

The staff and management at rare consider the health and safety of our campers, community members, volunteers, and staff as our top priority.

There is nothing more that we enjoy than connecting budding scientists and stewards with the rare lands. We know that many of you look forward to attending camp all year long, as do our education team members that will definitely miss all of you this summer. Please note, that our full trail network remains open and accessible to the public. We encourage you to come and connect with nature and the rare lands with your family over the summer.

Our Education department will continue to release short fun videos and activities you and your families can do together. Please keep an eye on our website, Facebook and Twitter to stay up to date!

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and we thank you for your understanding during this time. We wish you all a safe and healthy summer break and look forward to seeing many of you in our school programs in the fall.

Thank you,

The rare Education Team

The rare Charitable Research Reserve is proud to host both March Break ECO Camp and Summer ECO Camps for children ages 6-12.

Based out of our environmental education hub, the rare ECO Centre, children explore limestone cliffs, hike the trails of our old growth forest, practice organic/alternative gardening, and take part in a hands-on search for a variety of species during these fun-filled weeks. From pond-dipping for tadpoles to calling for birds, catching exotic species of butterflies and identifying a variety of snakes, there is no time for boredom.

Our rare ECO Camps provide children the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills, values, and motivation necessary to become environmentally-responsible citizens – all while having fun. As with our school-based programs, not only do these opportunities build critical thinking and scientific inquiry skills, they help young people form a bond with the natural world, encouraging them to be better custodians of the landscape. Benefits of this program include environmental education, contributions to physical health and well-being, and development of personal and social skills.

Explore rare through the eyes of your children when you enroll them in one of our rare ECO Camps!
