Phragmites Control – Morning, September 1

Every year, rare takes on ecological restoration initiatives to enhance and rehabilitate the unique native habitats of this urban land trust. Join us and help conserve native biodiversity through the removal of invasive species! Volunteers can expect to learn invasive plant identification as well as proper removal techniques. This is a great opportunity for those looking to gain in-field experience with ecological restoration and become more familiar with the flora of southern Ontario.

Due to COVID-19, the 2022 field season may look a little different. The events listed below are subject to change or cancellation due to COVID-19. Please keep an eye on our events calendar throughout the season to get up to date information on events. The following events are free but registration is required and events have limited spaces available.

Phragmites is a perennial grass native to Eurasia that has been damaging biodiversity, wetlands and beaches in Ontario for decades. It is an aggressive spreader that out-competes native species through competition for resources and the release of toxins. It reduces habitat and food for wildlife, lowers water levels, increases the risk of fire and can affect agriculture, road safety and recreational activities. Volunteers will assist with the removal of this species at a number of sites across the property, including the Blair Flats wetland.

Cost: This event is FREE
