Invasive Shrub Removal – Afternoon, October 22

On Saturday, October 22, 2022, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. volunteers are welcome to come assist in removing invasive shrubs such as Common and Glossy Buckthorn from our Eramosa Property 2 location. These shrubs outcompete native vegetation, create large monocultures, and reduce the functionality of the ecosystem and the the number of species the area can support.

Registered volunteers are asked to meet at the gate located immediately south of 4916 Wellington Road 29. Directions are as follows:

  1. Take 401 E to Wellington Country Rd 34 in Morriston
  2. Follow Wellington County Rd 34 and First Line Nassagaweya to Wellington County Rd 29 in Guelph/Eramosa
  3. Destination is on the left (almost directly across from Barden Street)
  4. Park on the shoulder of Barden Street

There is parking available along Barden Street.

Please be advised that Buckthorn has thorns so should be handled carefully. In some areas of the property there are hazardous plant species like Poison Ivy and Giant Hogweed. On the event day you will be given tips on how to identify these plant species and how to best protect yourself.

Volunteers should wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes and socks, layers of loose, comfortable clothing that can get dirty, a long-sleeved shirt that can be tucked in, and a sunhat. We also recommend that volunteers bring a refillable water bottle, snacks, work gloves, sun screen, insect repellant, and a rain coat (if rain is in the forecast). Extra work gloves, work equipment (including an excavator) will be provided, and first aid is available. Please note that, as we are working in a remote area of the property, there is no access to washroom facilities.
