Yellow Flag Iris Pull (June 8 – Morning)
Every year, rare takes on ecological restoration initiatives to enhance and rehabilitate the unique native habitats of this urban land trust. Join us and help conserve native biodiversity through the removal of invasive species! Volunteers can expect to learn invasive plant identification as well as proper removal techniques. This is a great opportunity for those looking to gain in field experience with ecological restoration and become more familiar with the flora of southern Ontario.
We will be removing Yellow Flag Iris (Iris pseudacorus) from along a recently restored cold water creek and/or along the Grand River. Yellow Flag Iris is a perennial aquatic plant native to Europe, western Asia and North Africa. It spreads by seeds and underground rhizomes. The creation of dense mats can block water flow, displace native vegetation, and reduce habitat for native fish and birds.
Instruction on species ID, removal techniques and its impact on native ecosystems will be provided during this session
Cost: This event is FREE, but registration is required. Attendees meet at rare’s Lamb’s Inn headquarters at 1679 Blair Road, and staff will lead them to the site. For more information, contact rare’s Conservation Technician at 519-650-9336 x114 or email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
