Bauman Creek Restoration

Friday, July 12, 2019
1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Meet at Lamb's Inn

In 2016, rare began restoration of Bauman Creek, a cold water stream. The downstream portion was historically diverted and channelized to increase the area of useable cropland, and a culvert was installed. Over time the culvert shifted and the water stopped flowing, flooding a portion of the former agricultural field and cutting the stream off from the Grand River. To restore flow to the Grand River and improve habitat, restoration efforts included removing the farm lane and culvert and realigning approximately 80 meters of meandering channel with a series of pools and riffles. This includes two extra-deep sections for fish to use during periods of low flow, and shallow sections with fast, turbulent currents. The channel was supplemented with logs, boulders and undercut banks to trap sediment, prevent erosion and provide shelter. Substrate texture ranges between sand and gravel to large boulders.  Native trees and shrubs were planted in the riparian area in 2017 and 2018 to provide the stream with shade and nutrients.

With the channel reconnected to the Grand River, flow has returned, however, the altered channel between the restoration site and the natural channel close to the river requires improvement. Volunteer days will focus on habitat improvement in this approximately 400m section by altering the straight, wide and shallow channel to a ‘U” shaped channel with meanders, pools and riffles. Volunteer days will include digging out the channel and adding boulders, cobble and gravel to the creek in strategic locations. On site instruction will be provided. This is a great opportunity for those looking to gain in field experience with ecological restoration.

*HEAVY LIFTING INVOLVED—ideally you should be able to lift approximately 50-75lbs. Rubber boots or water shoes are recommended.

Cost: This event is FREE

Each volunteer day will have a morning (9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m) and afternoon (1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.) session. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for one or both sessions.
