Fall Seed Collection + Possible Plant Backs

Wednesday, November 20, 2019
1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Meet at Lamb's Inn (1679 Blair Road, Cambridge)

See the rare trails while enjoying a guided hike with staff and other volunteers.  While hiking we will be keeping an eye out for ripe seeds from desirable native plants. If found, seeds will be collected for use in the Native Plant Propagation Program. After the hike seeds will be sown into trays. If there is sufficient seed quantity, there may also be an opportunity for volunteers to become Plant Foster Parts (see below). If plants from last year are ready, we may also plant back native plants in restoration areas as we go.

Plant Foster Parents: care for seed trays at their own home until the plants are ready for transplant at approximately 4” tall. Most native seeds being collected require a period of cold stratification meaning trays would be fostered outside over the winter and would sprout in the spring. Foster Parents can then keep approximately 1/3 of the tray for their own gardens and bring the rest back to be planted back at rare!

Species identification will be taught on site as well as instruction on proper collection techniques. This is a great opportunity for those looking to gain in field experience with ecological restoration and become more familiar with flora of southern Ontario.

Cost: This event is FREE

Each volunteer day will have a morning (9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m) and afternoon (1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.) session. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for one or both sessions.
