On Earthworms

Today I learned that earthworms are recent arrivals to Ontario’s ecosystems. Most of the land was under hundreds of metres of Ice just over ten thousand years ago, and when that ice left, there were no earthworms to move the soil. It takes a while for earthworms to travel up from the south, and the ones that we have were largely introduced by European settlers. Some scientists are debating whether earthworms should be considered invasive in Ontario or not. So the Early Bird has to get up pretty early in the morning to catch some of these worms, unlike these ECO Campers at rare in this photograph taken by Abby Todd in August 2014.

But Early Birds still have a chance to win $1,000 in our Early Bird Draw this Sunday as part of our Summer 50/50 raffle! Learn more and buy tickets at https://rafflebox.ca/raffle/rare, and help raise funds for research programs and ECO Camps to study these earthworms and more here at rare!
