Unrestricted Funding from Gore Mutual supports internship at rare’s Springbank Gardens

Cambridge, ON – The rare Charitable Research Reserve is pleased to announce a strategic charitable partnership with Gore Mutual Insurance to the land trust’s Springbank Gardens in support of local food security.

The $23,900 unrestricted grant was provided to support rare’s highest priority needs. When thinking of how best to allocate these funds, the internship was seen as the best choice for supporting rare’s Springbank Gardens and community garden members.

Working with community volunteers and staff at rare, the intern will help with the growing and harvesting of organic foods for donation to local food banks across Waterloo Region.

“The intern’s work will touch thousands of individuals,” says Christine Thompson, Major Gifts Manager at rare. “This steward will support marginalized community members, helping them access garden space for the growing of traditional and culturally appropriate foods.”

“Springbank Gardens is a place where garden skills and knowledge are exchanged across all ages and abilities,” says Taryn Jarvis, the Gill Ratcliffe Gardens & Facilities Coordinator at rare. “This will widen our community’s ability to be more self-sufficient and sustainable.”

“We are proud continued supporters of rare and stand beside them with this unrestricted support to meet the emerging conservation and food security needs within Waterloo Region.”Chantelle Moore, Manager of Social Impact, Gore Mutual Insurance

The rare Charitable Research Reserve is a land trust stewarding over 1,200 acres of environmentally sensitive lands across eight properties across Waterloo Region and Wellington County. Springbank Farm’s community gardens provide 110 plots to community members based on need, as well as operating an organic food bank garden providing fresh produce to local food banks like the Cambridge Food Bank.
