Application to Conduct Research

Prior to initiating a research project at rare, all researchers are expected to complete a rare Research and Land Use Application Form. It is recommended that applicants contact the Research Department to discuss their project and needs and/or to arrange a site visit prior to filling out an application.

Please submit your application at least 4 weeks prior to the anticipated start date of your work to allow enough time for review. You will be contacted in the event that more information or clarifications are required. The review process involves initial consideration by the Program Scientist, and then further review by the Research Advisory and Environmental Advisory Committees. Final approval is granted by the Executive Director, after which a response letter will be sent to the applicant.

Following approval, rare asks researchers to report the GPS locations of their specific research sites (often chosen in conjunction with the Research staff) and/or a site map. Students conducting research should provide a copy of their thesis or dissertation following project completion, and multi-year projects should provide a brief annual report of progress. All publications from research conducted at rare should acknowledge the “rare Charitable Research Reserve” and a copy should be provided for our library.
